Getting around the Maldives works differently from almost anywhere else, because there are no roads connecting the islands. Maldives airports: which one will you land at?

Almost every visitor arrives at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhulé Island, right next to the capital, Malé. From there, four more airports carry international traffic into specific regions: Gan in the far south, Hanimaadhoo in the north, Maafaru for Noonu Atoll’s luxury resorts, and Villa/Maamigili for Ari Atoll. Speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight?

• Speedboat — for resorts within about an hour of Velana. Runs day and night; roughly $100–250 per person round trip.

Ferries and getting around without a resort transfer

Travelling between local islands rather than staying at one resort? Public ferries, run by the state operator MTCC, connect Malé to nearby atolls cheaply, if slowly and on limited daily schedules.
