You book the cheap red-eye home. It leaves Malé at 02:40, so you keep the last resort night and save on the airfare. Then the resort emails your Maldives speedboat transfer time: the boat leaves the island at 19:00.
The boat runs to a schedule that has nothing to do with your flight, and you spend the final seven hours of a honeymoon in a terminal. That mistake is common, avoidable, and almost never mentioned on the pages that quote the fares. This guide gives the 2026 price ladder for a speedboat transfer, real crossing times by route, and the timing rules that decide whether the boat fits your flights.
The short version, in numbers
Three figures cover most of the decision.
Fare. A shared speedboat transfer to a resort near Malé sits at roughly USD 100–200 per person return. Past about a 25-minute crossing that band breaks, and USD 250–490 is normal. Scheduled boats to inhabited islands cost far less, at USD 20–70 each way.
Time. Crossings run from 10 minutes to about 90, and anything longer than that is usually a plane rather than a boat.
Hours. A speedboat transfer can legally run after dark, and many resorts accept arrivals until the small hours. Almost none carry guests out to the airport that late, and scheduled public services stop by early evening. The window is not symmetrical, and that asymmetry is what catches people.

Who ends up on a boat, and who does not
The transfer mode is not a preference but a consequence of where the resort sits, and the resort tells you which one applies once you send your flight details.
A speedboat transfer serves properties within roughly 60 to 80 kilometres of Velana International Airport. In practice that covers almost everything in North Malé Atoll and South Malé Atoll. It also reaches the near edges of North Ari and South Ari, plus the guesthouse islands of Vaavu Atoll.
Beyond that line the water gets too long to cross comfortably. Baa, Lhaviyani, Raa and Noonu switch to seaplanes, while Laamu, Addu, Thaa and Meemu need a domestic flight with a short boat leg at the far end.
That last point matters for reading price lists, because a resort in Dhaalu or Faafu may advertise a fifteen-minute boat ride and be telling the truth. What you actually pay in 2026
Published rates spread far wider than the headline range suggests. Below is the speedboat transfer ladder as it stood in mid-2026, drawn from operator pages, resort transfer sheets and Maldives-based agency price lists.
Resort fares: where the USD 100–200 band holds
For the inner ring, the familiar figure is accurate. Paradise Island Resort quotes about USD 119 return per adult for a twenty-minute run, with children at half. Fihalhohi and Adaaran Club Rannalhi both sit near USD 150 return per adult on crossings of about forty-five minutes, and Grand Park Kodhipparu asks around USD 180.
Move outward and the band gives way. A Maldives-based agency list published in May 2026 put Baros at USD 180–260 return and Anantara Dhigu at USD 250–370 for the same kind of shared seat. Centara Grand Island, a 75-minute crossing on the Ari fringe, came in at USD 350–490. Anantara Veli has quoted USD 258.72 return per adult — a figure precise enough to tell you tax is already inside it.
So the honest summary is narrower than the popular one. Under half an hour, budget USD 100–200 per person return for a speedboat transfer. Over half an hour, budget USD 250–500 and treat anything lower as a pleasant surprise.
Scheduled boats to inhabited islands: USD 20–70 each way
Guesthouse travellers use a separate network, and it is far cheaper. Three operators run the Malé–Maafushi route daily, Fridays included. Reported fares sit between USD 20 and USD 40 one way for a 30 to 45-minute crossing.
Fulidhoo in Vaavu costs about USD 40 one way for roughly seventy minutes. Thoddoo runs about USD 35, and Dhigurah in South Ari is a two-hour crossing at USD 45 to 70, depending on whether the boat makes intermediate stops. The public ferry undercuts all of it at MVR 22, around USD 1.50, but takes ninety minutes to Maafushi and does not sail on Fridays.
Private charter: the price of not waiting
A private speedboat transfer leaves when you are ready, and rates start near USD 95 for a short hop in a small craft before climbing steeply from there. Hard Rock Hotel Maldives publishes USD 1,200 for a private return boat carrying up to fifteen people. The Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi has been quoted at over USD 9,000 for a private yacht.
For four to six people on a long crossing, a charter often costs little more per head than shared seats, and it removes the airport wait entirely. Ask for the number before assuming it is out of reach.
The line item most quotes leave out
Maldivian resorts price in a convention that inflates the final bill. A rate written as “USD 150++” is a rate before tax. Tourism goods and services tax rose from 16% to 17% on 1 July 2025 under the seventh amendment to the Goods and Services Tax Act. Most resorts add a mandatory 10% service charge on the same items.
Run the arithmetic and USD 150++ becomes about USD 190. For two adults that is an extra USD 80 nobody budgeted. Ask whether a speedboat transfer quote is “++” or all-in before you compare two resorts.
Why the fare ignores the distance
Fuel and crew time set a floor, and above that floor the number reflects positioning rather than operating cost.
The clearest illustration comes from two twenty-minute crossings: Paradise Island charges about USD 119 return, while Jumeirah Vittaveli has been quoted near USD 340 for a comparable ride. Same water, same weather, roughly the same minutes on the boat, and nearly three times the price.
Meeru Maldives Resort Island cuts the other way, sitting at the far end of North Malé Atoll, 55 to 60 minutes out. Its speedboat transfer has been costed around USD 100–150 return per adult, which is cheaper than resorts a third of the distance away. Meeru is a large mid-market property that fills its own boats, and a small luxury island cannot spread that cost the same way.
Two practical conclusions follow. Do not read the speedboat transfer price as a proxy for how remote a resort is, and when comparing two properties on total cost, get both transfer figures in writing before you decide. The gap between them can exceed the gap between the room rates.
The one-way clock: why “runs day and night” is only half true
This is the section worth the most to you, and it is missing from almost every page on the subject.
Boats are not bound by daylight the way seaplanes are. Seaplanes fly under visual flight rules and stop at dusk, with last departures from Malé typically around 15:30 to 16:00. A speedboat transfer carries navigation lights, radios and a licensed crew, and the Transport Authority permits sailing after dark. Every guide draws the obvious conclusion, then stops.
The part that gets left out is direction.
Arriving after dark usually works
Resort boats meet late flights, and trade transfer sheets for Meeru list a final airport-to-resort departure no later than 02:00. Gili Lankanfushi and Taj Exotica both advertise round-the-clock arrivals on a fifteen to twenty-minute run. If your inbound lands at 23:40, a boat resort in Malé Atoll is the sensible booking.
Two caveats attach. The first is a night surcharge, reported at 20 to 30 percent after roughly 20:00, because sailing in the dark needs more equipment and a more experienced skipper. The second is that scheduled shared boats rarely run late, so a genuinely late-night speedboat transfer is resort-operated or privately chartered.
Leaving early is the constraint that actually bites
The same Meeru trade sheet that allows a 02:00 arrival puts the last resort-to-airport boat at 19:00. The window runs about nineteen hours inbound and closes at dinnertime outbound.
That asymmetry has consequences your booking engine will not flag:
- A pre-dawn departure means leaving the island the night before. For a 06:00 flight there is no morning speedboat transfer early enough at most properties.
- A very late departure means a long airport wait. Leave at 19:00 for an 02:40 flight and you have hours to fill.
- The last resort night can be worth less than it looks. You pay for the room; you may spend the evening at Velana.
For scheduled island services the cutoff is earlier still. Boats to Vaavu have been listed departing Malé no later than 16:00, with returns at 06:00 and 13:00. That combination defeats both a mid-afternoon arrival and a mid-afternoon departure. Fulidhoo runs twice daily except Fridays, when only the morning boat sails.
The rule to plan around: choose the outbound flight against the resort’s last boat, not against the airport’s timetable. Confirm both cutoff times in writing before you ticket anything.
Routes and journey times from Velana
Times below are typical rather than guaranteed, and a headwind or a fully loaded boat adds ten minutes to most of them.

One naming trap is worth flagging: Fulhadhoo in Baa and Fulidhoo in Vaavu are different islands on different routes, and booking sites confuse them regularly. If a listing mentions the Hulhumalé ferry terminal or ferry route 309, it is describing Fulidhoo.
A shared boat departs once its passengers have arrived, and those passengers are on flights that are not yours.
Resorts group guests by arrival time, which is why the wait at Velana commonly runs one to four hours. Operators quote two to four hours as normal on busy days. Nothing has gone wrong when that happens; it is how a shared speedboat transfer works. A resort running five to seven daily crossings still has to fill each one.
The airport layout added a step in 2025, when the new Terminal 1 opened in July and took over all international flights while the older building became Terminal 2. Check-in counters for scheduled boats to inhabited islands sit at Terminal 2, a 10 to 15-minute walk along the airport road. Immigration and baggage at T1 have been running 75 to 90 minutes at peak.
Resort guests do not have to think about that walk. A representative meets you in arrivals with a name board and takes the luggage. Independent travellers on a scheduled boat should build both the walk and the queue into the connection.
Small details catch first-timers: most boats allow one suitcase plus a cabin bag, with extra pieces sometimes chargeable. Craft under 22 seats generally have no toilet, none of them have air conditioning, and surfboards attract a surcharge of around USD 15.
Why 2026 quotes keep moving
Anyone comparing an older article against a live quote in 2026 will find a gap, and there is a specific reason for it.
Fuel Supplies Maldives raised pump prices on 5 March 2026, taking petrol from MVR 13.50 to MVR 16.01 a litre and diesel from MVR 13.92 to MVR 17.54. That is a 26 percent rise on diesel, and the largest single increase in recent memory. Wholesale rates to businesses moved much further in mid-March, with diesel in the Malé area jumping from MVR 16.52 to MVR 27.22 a litre. A partial reversal followed for ferry operators, public transport providers and fishermen inside the government subsidy scheme.
Retail diesel was still MVR 17.54 in mid-June 2026. Tourist boat operators are not public transport providers, so several have posted notices that speedboat transfer fares are rising repeatedly and may fall again once supply settles.
Two things follow. Treat any fare published before March 2026 as a floor rather than an estimate, and when a quote is more than a few weeks old, ask for it again in writing rather than assuming it still holds.
Sea state, monsoon, and who should book a plane instead
The boat is the one transfer where the journey itself can spoil the arrival.
Typical craft cruise around 28 to 35 knots, and twenty-two-seat hulls with twin engines handle a chop well enough. Ten-seaters are built for short hops inside an atoll and make poor choices for an open crossing. During the southwest monsoon from May to October, swells build fast and a forty-five-minute run can turn punishing. Departures get delayed, consolidated, or occasionally cancelled — always for safety, never on your schedule.
Think hard before booking a long speedboat transfer if you are:
- prone to motion sickness, even mildly
- pregnant, or travelling with an infant under twelve months
- managing a back or spine condition
- older and tired by sustained vibration and impact
If a boat resort still suits you, two adjustments help. Take medication half an hour before departure rather than on board. And ask for a seat in the rear third, which operators themselves recommend for infants, wheelchair users and anyone sensitive to chop.
The speedboat transfer becomes the wrong tool past about ninety minutes of crossing, at any resort beyond Malé and Ari, or for a traveller whose reaction to rough water is a medical issue. In those cases the seaplane premium, or a domestic flight through one of the regional airports, buys something real.
One more constraint applies. Most resorts do not permit third-party boats to land guests at their jetty, so hiring a cheaper outside operator is usually not an option once you have booked the room.
Before you ticket your flights: what to confirm in writing
Send one email to the resort and get one email back covering all of it, because these six lines protect the whole trip.
- The transfer type and crossing time for your specific property, not for the atoll.
- The return fare per adult and per child, stated as all-in or “++”, so you can add 17% tax and any service charge yourself.
- The last inbound boat on your arrival date, and whether a night surcharge applies.
- The last outbound boat on your departure date. That number decides whether the final night is worth paying for.
- The delay policy if your international flight lands late: rebooked onto the next departure, or charged again.
- The deadline for flight details. Most properties want them 24 to 72 hours ahead; some ask for three days.
Do this before ticketing rather than after, because flights are the expensive thing to change and the boat is not.
Who a boat transfer suits
It suits you if your resort sits in Malé Atoll or on the near Ari fringe and your flights land in the evening or overnight. It also suits anyone watching total cost, and anyone staying on an inhabited island, where the fare is a fraction of a resort rate.
It does not suit you if the crossing exceeds ninety minutes, or if you travel in the southwest monsoon and dislike rough water. It is also wrong when your outbound flight leaves before dawn, or when the resort sits beyond boat range and you hoped to dodge the seaplane bill.
It fails outright when you plan the speedboat transfer after booking the flights, which is the single error behind most of the terminal-lounge stories.
